The PUAC (Executive Vice-chairperson Kim Kwan-yong) held a New Year's special lecture on February 22 at the Jeju Sun Hotel. Its topic was “The Situation on the Korean Peninsula and the Role of the PUAC.” The New Year's special lecture, which was held in all of the regional assemblies of the 17 cities, provinces, and the five northern provinces, culminated in the Jeju lecture.

The Jeju lecture was attended by about 200 people, including Executive Vice-chairperson Kim Kwan-yong; Ko Chung-hong, Vice-chair of the Jeju Assembly; the heads of local chapters in Jeju; members of the Central Committee; and PUAC council members from Jeju. Dignitaries in attendance were Deputy Governor Kim Sung-joong of the Jeju Special -Governing Province, Chairperson Kim Kyung-hak of the Jeju Special -Governing Provincial Council, and Jeju Deputy Education Superintendent Oh Sun-moon.

Participating PUAC members and guests had a time to communicate with the Jeju Assembly members of the 21st-term PUAC and reaffirm their commitment to playing their roles through a rice cake cutting ceremony in which they wished for a free, peaceful and prosperous Korean Peninsula, a special lecture, and a lecture on current issues.

Executive Vice-chairperson Kim Kwan-yong spoke about the background and intention of North Korea's shift to its stance on South Korea and reunification and its series of military provocations, as well as the direction of the South Korean government's reunification and North Korea policy. Kim asked the PUAC council members to pull together their unification energy and promote liberal and democratic peaceful reunification activities.

Following the lecture, Kim Esra, a PUAC policy researcher, gave a lecture on the topic of "Prospects for the Situation on the Korean Peninsula in 2024 and Direction of Response.” She emphasized the following as practical tasks for the PUAC: ▲ laying the foundation for the realization of a non-nuclear, peaceful, and prosperous Korean Peninsula through the spread of unification consensus, ▲ continued attention and efforts to improve human rights issues, and ▲ increasing awareness and cooperation for the successful resettlement of North Korean defectors.

Starting with the 2024 special lecture, the Jeju Assembly will promote various reunification activities to spread public opinion on the need to prepare for reunification based on liberal democracy.
